How to make farmhouse decor with hot glue and an Iron Orchid Design mold

The first DIY I want to tell you how to make is the adorable farmhouse decor with a mold and some Surebonder hot glue!

You’re going to start by picking the mold that you want to use, then fill it with hot glue.

If you can’t tell, my Surebonder hot glue gun is a hot mess! I’ve had this glue gun for over a year, so it is definitely time to retire it.

Back to the DIY

Make sure your hot glue mold is dry before you remove it. I used my heat gun to speed up the drying process! If you don’t have a heat gun, you can set the mold to the side to dry while we do this next step.

Grab a Dollar Tree wood rectangle and your Apple Barrel Burnt Umber Acrylic Paint. Pour the brown paint directly onto the wood and use a wet wipe to spread the paint across the surface.

Then, use a clean wet wipe to remove the excess paint.

Next, hot glue your hot glue mold onto the center of the wood rectangle. Once the mold was secured in place, I painted over the hot glue mold and the front of the wood rectangle with brown paint.

Allow the brown paint to dry, then use a chippy paintbrush to paint the entire front with Apple Barrel White Acrylic paint.

Once your white paint coat has dried, rub a wet wipe over the front where you want to have a distressed look. The wet wipe is going to remove some of the white paint and allow the brown to peek through.

For this next step, I used my drill. If you don’t have a drill, you can always hot glue the jute twine hanger to the back of the Dollar Tree wood rectangle.

If you do have a drill, you’re going to drill two holes in the top of the wood rectangle near the top corners. Then, thread the jute twine through the holes and tie them in a knot.

I kept the twine very long so I could pull the twine up in the front and back of the farmhouse sign to give it the look of a double hanger.

Easy Farmhouse Home Decor

Now, let me tell you how to make the second Surebonder Glue Gun DIY Home Decor! To start, you’re going to need 9 of the giant craft sticks from Walmart and your Surebonder Glue Gun!

Lay seven of the giant craft sticks side by side, and connect them by hot-gluing a giant craft stick across the top and bottom of the craft sticks.

Next, you’re going to stain the wood! All you need is brown paint (I used Apple Barrel Burnt Umber Acrylic Paint) and some wet wipes.

Pour the brown paint directly onto the wood and use the wet wipe to spread the paint across the entire surface.

Then, use a clean wet wipe to remove the excess paint from the wood. You can always use a furniture stain, but they are usually too expensive for me!

Set the stained giant craft sticks to the side, and grab the Dollar Tree home lettering. The home lettering was actually two pieces of wood glued together, and mine were already pulling apart, so I went ahead and separated the two pieces.

Then, I painted the wood letters white with Apple Barrel White Acrylic Paint. You can set this to the side to dry or use your heat gun to speed up the drying process.

While I had the white paint out, I went ahead and painted the edges of each craft stick.

Then I lightly brushed white paint across each wood craft stick and went back over it with a sanding sponge to get the perfect distressed look.

Next, I went around the edges of the Dollar Tree home lettering with the black Painter’s marker to make the letters really pop.

Who doesn’t love buffalo check?

The next step of making this adorable farmhouse DIY decor is to cut a large heart out of the Dollar Tree buffalo check fabric. I used a wooden Dollar Tree heart as the stencil for this.

Alright, you need your Surebonder hot glue gun again for this next part!

Hot glue the buffalo check heart to the top center of the wood craft sticks. Then, you’re going to hot glue the Dollar Tree chalkboard heart tag over the center of the buffalo check fabric heart.

Did you know that Surebonder even has glue sticks meant for fabric use? I used the regular hot glue for this and it worked just fine, but if you’re gluing fabric to fabric, it might be a good idea to get the fabric hot glue!

Once both the hearts are hot glued in place, you can hot glue the painted Dollar Tree home lettering underneath them. I put a generous amount of hot glue onto the back of the wood lettering and pressed it in place.

Add your hanger

To make the hanger for this DIY sign, I used Dollar Tree nautical rope and some more hot glue! Cut the rope to the length that you want your hanger to be, and hot glue each end of the rope to the back of the sign.

The last thing I did for this easy DIY decor was made a little bow out of jute twine to go on the chalkboard heart tag.

Tie a piece of jute twine into a bow and hot glue it onto the chalkboard tag heart. Trim the tails of the bow to the length that you want them, and you’re all done!
