This Reverse Canvas Patriotic USA Home Decor is the perfect DIY home decor idea for beginner crafters who want something simple, affordable, and adorable!

I always have so much fun making new pieces of home decor for my house, but I really love this DIY idea because of the adorable patriotic messy bow!

I am no professional bow maker, by any means, but I do my best and I just remind myself that there is no perfect way to DIY!

How to Make a Reverse Canvas Patriotic USA Home Decor

Alright, start this DIY project by removing the canvas from the frame. I used an Exacto Knife to cut the canvas so that I could still use it. Then, you need to remove the staples. 

PLEASE BE SAFE when you are removing the staples. I highly recommend using an actual staple remover. You can also just hammer the staples back into the wood. But, again, be careful because you don’t want to break the frame. 

Now, stain the Dollar tree canvas frame! I start by spraying the wooden frame with water. Then, I used a wet wipe to spread brown paint across the frame.

The water helps the wood absorb the paint pigment and gives it the perfect stained finish! 

How to make a messy bow

To make a messy bow, first, decide what patterns you want to use to make your bow. Mine are listed above in the supply list for this project.

I cut several strips of each of the ribbon patterns, then I ripped several strips of each of the fabric patterns. 

Ripping the fabrics gives the strips frayed edges and adds to the “messy” aspect of this messy bow! Start laying your ribbon and fabric strips in an Xbow pattern until you’re happy with the size of your bow. 

Now, pinch the center of the bow and secure it with either a zip tie or a piece of jute twine. You could also use another piece of ribbon or fabric.

Whatever you use, push all the strips up like a pom pom and trim the edges to even out your bow.

Fluff out the bow until you’re happy with how it looks, and set it to the side so you can finish with the reverse canvas portion of this DIY patriotic decor! 

Bring it all together

I dry placed the frame over the canvas and put the bow on the canvas to see how much space was left under it to put the USA. I used a pencil to trace out where I wanted the USA to be. 

Then, I simply painted over where I traced the letters on the canvas. I just used a small paintbrush to get the letters painted on precisely. I also outlined the S with a black paint pen to make it stand out more on the canvas.

Allow the paint to dry completely before you move on. I like to use my heat gun to speed up the drying process, but if you don’t have a heat gun, you can use a hairdryer in the low cool setting. 

Once the paint was dry, I stapled the canvas back onto its frame. You can also hot glue it in place if you don’t have staples. Before I put the bow in place, I attached the hanger to this reverse canvas project! 

I used Dollar Tree nautical rope and hot glued it to the top back of the canvas. You can hot glue some pieces of ribbon or fabric over the ends of the rope to secure it even more to the back of the canvas. 

Finally, hot glue your DIY messy bow onto the front of the canvas over your painted USA! Now, you’re ready to decorate for the summer holidays!
