How to Make a Mini DIY Lemon Napkin Sign
The Dollar Tree sign box that I used had a raised insert inside the frame, so I used my putty knife to remove the insert.
Then, I painted the inside of the sign box white. I like to use Apple Barrel paints because they are super affordable, but also great quality for my DIY projects!
I tried to use the Kilz Sealing Dark Wax, but it wasn’t working properly on the frame because even though it looks like wood, it has some kind of coating on it.
Instead, I tried to use Folkart Java Chalk Paint. I painted it straight onto the frame surface, then wiped it off with a paper towel, but it still didn’t do much to the frame’s color.
I painted it on and wiped it off several times. You can also just paint it onto the frame and let it dry, then lightly go over it with a wet wipe to pull some of the paint off the frame.
Then, apply a second coat of white paint to the inside of the sign. You don’t want the colors from the original design to show through the napkin when you decoupage it.
How to Decoupage
Decoupaging the napkins is an important part of making this Mini DIY Lemon Napkin Sign. If you’ve never decoupaged before, it is so easy!
First, you’re going to separate the plies of the blue napkin. You only need the ply with the pattern on it.
Apply a coat of Mod Podge over the white paint, then place the napkin onto the Mod Podge. Ball up some plastic saran wrap and use it to really press the napkin into the Mod Podge and smooth it out towards the edges.
I used an Exacto knife to trim the excess napkin. Next, you’re going to decoupage the lemon slice napkin onto the Dollar Tree wooden circle.
Again, you have to paint the surface white before you can decoupage the napkin, otherwise, you’ll have the natural wood color showing through the napkin.
Let the white paint dry, then paint the sides of the circle with Apple Barrel Yellow Acrylic Paint. I then used a wet wipe to smudge the yellow and white paint on the front of the circle.
Decoupage the lemon slice napkin
Separate the napkin plies of the lemon slice napkin, then trim the design so that it fits onto the wooden cirlce.
I put a piece of plastic saran wrap over the napkin and used my hand to just smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles in the napkin.
Once the Mod Podge is dry, remove any excess napkin from around the wooden circle. It might be easiest to lightly go over the edges of the circle with a sanding sponge.
Bring the pieces together
Hot glue the decoupaged wooden circle inside the Dollar Tree sign box. Then, make a cute little bow out of a thin burlap ribbon.
Fold a strip of the ribbon into the shape of a bow and secure the center with a piece of jute twine. Hot glue the little bow to the top of the lemon.
Lastly, you need to make the hanger for this Mini DIY Lemon Napkin Sign. Take your beads and put them in a small mixing bowl.
How to stain wood
Spray them with water, pour in some Apple Barrel Burnt Umber Acrylic Paint, and swirl the beads until they are all coated.
Pour the beads out onto a napkin and swirl them around to remove any excess paint. You’ll see that they have a stained finish when you finish wiping them with a clean, dry napkin.
Then, dry the beads. Again, I used my heat gun to speed up that process. If you don’t have a heat gun, you can use a hairdryer on the low cool setting.
Once all the beads are dry, go ahead and start threading them onto the jute twine. I alternated bead sizes as I threaded them onto the twine.
Keep threading until you’re happy with the length of your beaded hanger, then secure the beads on the end with either a dab of hot glue or a knot on each end.
The finishing touches
Finally, you need to secure the hanger to the sign! You have two options for how you can do that. I drilled two holes in the top of the frame and tied the ends of the twine in knots to keep them from coming out.
If you don’t have a drill, you can hot glue the ends of the jute twine onto the back of the Dollar Tree sign box!
You can also hot glue a piece of fabric or ribbon over the ends of the twine to secure the hanger even more if you want.
I hope you enjoyed this Mini DIY Lemon Napkin Sign for Summer or Spring as much as I did and decide to make it for yourself! If you do, I would love to see how yours turns out!
