How to make Dollar Tree Ship’s Wheel DIY Nautical Decor
Alright, let’s get to the good stuff! I started this project by hot-gluing my half wood beads onto the Dollar Tre ship’s wheel. I used 13 half wood beads because of how far apart I had them spaced, but you may use more or fewer beads for your project.
It’s easier, in my opinion, to hot glue the beads in place and then stain all of the wood at the same time. Otherwise, you would be staining each individual bead before you hot glued them in place.
Once the beads are secured in place on the Dollar Tree ship’s wheel, it is time to stain the wood! I mixed water and Apple Barrel Burnt Umber Acrylic Paint then used a paintbrush to spread the mixture onto the wheel and beads.
Allow the wood to dry. I used my heat gun to speed up the drying process, then I went over the wheel and beads with Apple Barrel White Acrylic Paint. Dry brush the white paint with a clean paintbrush. Make sure to keep a light hand to get an effortless distressed finish.
Once the white paint is dry, wrap the blue and white Dollar Tree baker’s twine around the base of each of the spokes of the ship’s wheel. Use a little bit of hot glue to secure the twine in place.
I thought I wanted to paint a circle around the center of the ship’s wheel with red paint, but once I had the paint on the wheel, I was not happy with how it looked, so I painted over it with white paint.
Bring it all together
Hot glue the Dollar Tree ship’s wheel onto the Dollar Tree bamboo wreath. Now it is time to make a bow! I cut a piece of the square lattice ribbon and folded it into a bow.
Then, I pinched the center and secured it with a zip tie. You could also use a piece of jute twine to secure your bow. Trim the tails of the bow and hot glue it onto the top center of your nautical ship’s wheel.
Now, paint a half wood bead with blue paint (I used Apple Barrel) and hot glue it over the zip tie on the bow. Finally, hot glue a piece of Dollar Tree nautical rope to the back of the wheel to create your hanger!
