DIY Mossy Bunny Sign

I am not even a little ashamed to say I am obsessed with this DIY Mossy Bunny Sign! I’ve been asked before, “what does a bunny have to do with Easter?” so I decided not to call this an Easter sign.

Instead, I want to highlight the honest neutrality of this project. Whether you use the mossy bunny or replace the center with a cow or saying, you can use this DIY decor idea all year long!

How to make a DIY Mossy Bunny Sign

I started this adorable and simple Easter decor DIY by removing the Dollar Tree stretched canvas from its wooden frame.

Then, I removed the ribbon hanger from the Dollar Tree bunny shape and sanded off the glitter. This next step is a little tedious, but it’s absolutely worth it!

Glue 15mm half beads around the front of the wooden canvas frame. Once all the beads were glued in place, I stained the beads and frame with brown paint.

To stain wood with acrylic paint you need water. I like to either mix a bit of water and paint in a small bowl or spray the wood with water then pour paint onto the surface.

How to stain wood with acrylic paint

For this project, I mixed water with paint in a small bowl and used a paintbrush to apply the mixture to the wooden frame and beads.

Then, I wiped over the frame with a wet wipe to remove any excess paint from the surface. You’re left with an affordable stained finish! I used the same technique to stain 6 quart paint sticks.

Allow the wood pieces to dry completely. I like to use my heat gun. You can also use a hairdryer on the low-cool setting.

Next, I brushed white acrylic paint onto each of the stained paint sticks and used another paint stick to slightly remove the white paint and create a textured finish.

Once the white paint was dry, I sanded each of the paint sticks with a piece of sandpaper. Then, I trimmed each paint stick to fit onto the back of the frame, and I glued them in place.

I wanted them to be really secure to the frame, so I also added some staples.

Get ready for a mess

Before you move on, you might want to make sure you have a trashcan nearby. This next step is pretty messy!

Start gluing the floral moss onto the Dollar Tree jumping bunny shape. Once the entire bunny is covered (it’s going to look like a big blog at first) go ahead and clean up the excess moss.

Then, trim the floral moss from around the bunny shape. I glued a white pompom onto the bunny to be its tail.

Then, I tied a little bow out of buffalo check ribbon and jute twine, glued it to the bunny’s neck, and glued the bunny onto the quart paint sticks!

Lastly, I glued a piece of decorative nautical rope at the top of the sign to make the hanger for this DIY mossy bunny sign!
