How to Make a DIY Farmhouse Shelf with Lemon Scrapbook Paper
The first thing I did to make this adorable DIY shelf was stained the Dollar Tree wooden crates. Mix a bit of brown paint and water in a small bowl.
Paint the mixture onto the wood, then use a wet wipe to remove the excess paint. Make sure to stain the inside of the crates as well.
Use the same mixture to stain the Dollar Tree bamboo skewers, wooden craft cubes, and birch spindles. I just used a wet wipe to apply the mixture to the skewers, cubes, and spindles.
I painted the inside bottoms of the wood crate with Apple Barrel White Acrylic Paint. This prevents the wood color from showing through the tissue paper when you decoupage it.
Also paint the sides of the crates that have the handles with white paint. Let all the paint dry. I used my heat gun to speed up the drying process.
How to Decoupage Tissue Paper
Cut the tissue paper to fit inside both of the crates. Apply a coat of Mod Podge to the insides and place the tissue paper onto the wood.
Ball up a bit of plastic saran wrap and use it to smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles in the tissue paper.
Next, I hot glued the stained Dollar Tree bamboo skewers to the front and back of crates. Once they’re glued in place, trim the skewers so they don’t hang over the edges.
Apply Mod Podge to the remaining sides of the crates and place the lemon scrapbook paper onto the Mod Podge.
Let it dry, then tear the excess paper. You can go over the edges with a sanding sponge to tear the paper and remove the excess.
Use a nail filer to cut the paper where the holes are in the crate. Then, hot glue a stained birch spindle in each corner of one of the crates.
Bring it all together
Flip the other crate upside down and place the crate with the spindles attached on the upside down crate. Mark where the spindles are going to be on the bottom of that crate.
I used a drill to make holes in the bottom of the crate for the spindles to go in. Push the spindles through the holes, and make sure the top shelf is level.
Flip the entire shelf upside down and hot glue the stained wooden craft cubes to the bottom of the shelf to be the feet of your DIY shelf.
