How to Make a DIY Farmhouse Bee Sign
First, you’re going to paint the surface of your Dollar Tree sign with white paint. You want to make sure the original design on the sign is completely covered.
Allow the paint to dry, then paint the sides of the sign white as well. Before you can decoupage the bee napkin to the sign, you have to separate the napkin plies.
Otherwise, the top ply (the one with the design on it) might not adhere properly to the surface and could start to peel up later.
How to decoupage
Apply a coat of Mod Podge to the sign, and place the bee napkin onto the surface. Use a rolling pin to smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles in the napkin, then let the Mod Podge dry.
I used a sanding sponge on the edges of the sign to tear away the excess napkin. Next, you’re going to cut a single pattern out of the bee you napkin and separate the plies.
I traced the shape of the bee you napkin cut out on my foam board and cut the board to fit. Then, apply a coat of Mod Podge and place the napkin onto the surface.
Smooth out the wrinkles and bubbles and let the Mod Podge dry. Hot glue the decoupaged foam board to the middle of the decoupaged Dollar Tree sign.
How to age your DIY bee sign
I used a fine-tip paintbrush to lightly brush a bit of brown paint (Apple Barrel Burnt Umber) onto the edges of the Dollar Tree sign. Slightly smudge it to create the aged look.
Then, I sanded the sides of the sign to distress the paint. Next, I created the base for my farmhouse bee sign out of Tumbling Tower blocks and dowels.
I hot glued 13 of the blocks together to create the base. You can line the blocks up against a straight edge to make sure that they aren’t glued together crooked.
I sanded down the blocks to get off any glue that seeped out from between the blocks. Then, I drilled two holes through the bottom of the Dollar Tree sign to attach the wood dowels.
I marked on the Tumbling Tower blocks base where the holes were in the Dollar Tree sign and drilled holes in the base.
Bring it all together
Next, I stained the wood for my base. I painted the Apple Barrel Burnt Umber onto the block base and used a baby wipe to remove the excess paint.
I used a baby wipe to spread the paint on the wood dowels and pushed them into the holes in the Dollar Tree sign.
Put a dab of hot glue on both the holes in the Dollar Tree sign to secure the dowels in place. I also put some hot glue to secure the top of the wood dowels in place.
Lastly, hot glue the bottom of the wood dowels to the holes in the base! Once the glue is dry, you’re ready to decorate your home with this adorable DIY bee sign!
