How to Make DIY Fall Home Decor with Pumpkin Spice Scented Broom
The first thing I did to bring this adorable DIY autumn room decor to life was removed the sticker and scored horizontal lines across the back of the Dollar Tree chalkboard sign with a ruler and a razor cutter (like a box opener).
I defined the lines by scraping a screwdriver across each of them. This helps create a more realistic faux shiplap finish!
Then, I painted over the entire back of the sign with Apple Barrel Burnt Umber Acrylic Paint. Allow the paint to completely dry before moving on.
Use a dry chippy paintbrush to lightly brush white paint (I used Apple Barrel Snow White Acrylic Paint) horizontally across the back of the sign.
You want the brown paint to show through the white coat of paint to create an aged, distressed finish for this DIY fall decor project!
How to make a DIY frame
Next, you need to make the frame for your DIY fall sign! I used Dollar Tree Tumbling Tower blocks. Dry place the blocks around the edge of the sign to determine how many you need.
I had to trim my sign just a little bit to make the frame fit better. Then, hot glue the blocks together to create each side of the frame.
To stain the wooden blocks, pour your brown paint onto them and spray them with a bit of water. Then, use a wet wipe to spread the paint across the surfaces.
Repeat on all sides of the strips and allow the paint to completely dry. Before you attach the frame to the sign, you need to add to your faux shiplap finish.
Use a fine-tip paintbrush to lightly apply black paint to the lines you scored on the sign. Allow the black paint to dry, then hot glue the stained wooden blocks around the outer edges of the sign.
Bring your DIY fall sign together
We’re almost done making this adorable (and affordable) DIY fall home decor! Hot glue the wooden finial cap to the top center of the sign so you can hang the scented broom from it.
Next, hot glue half wood beads, evenly spaced, onto the frame. Make a small raffia bow and hot glue it just under the handle of the pumpkin spice-scented broom.
Remove one of the sunflowers from the wire and secure it over the center of the raffia bow. You can either twist the wire to secure it or remove the wire and hot glue the sunflower in place.
Finally, cut a piece of the wired jute cord from the spool and hot glue its ends to the back of the sign to create the hanger for your DIY fall home decor with a pumpkin spice scented broom!
