How to Make a DIY Book Page Pumpkin – Vintage Inspired Fall Decor

The first step to making this affordable Dollar Tree reverse canvas Fall decor is removing the canvas from its frame!

I use an Exacto Knife to cut the canvas from the frame and pulled any scrap pieces from the back. Then, either remove the staples or hammer them back into the wood.

Layout how many of the birch wood paint mixing paddles you need to cover the canvas frame and mark where you need to cut each one to make them fit properly.

Cut each of the paint-mixing paddles to the correct size, then secure them together by hot-gluing giant craft sticks perpendicularly across the stirring paddles.

How to stain wood with acrylic paint

Mix a bit of your brown paint (I used Apple Barrel burnt umber acrylic paint) and water in a small mixing bowl.

Use a dry, chippy paintbrush to spread the mixture across the front of your birch wood paint stirrer surface as well as the Dollar Tree canvas frame.

Remove any excess paint with a wet wipe. Once you wipe over the surface with a wet wipe, you’ll see the perfect stained finish! If you want to go darker, just repeat the process!

How to do a “Chippy Finish”

Make sure your surface is completely dry (I use my heat gun to speed up the drying process) then use a dry chippy paintbrush to apply petroleum jelly randomly across your surface.

Wherever you apply the petroleum jelly is where the paint is going to flake and chip to give you the chippy finish.

Then, paint over the entire surface with white chalk paint. I used Waverly Chalk paint for this project.

Alternate going horizontally and vertically across the surface until you have an even coat, and allow the paint to mostly dry.

I say mostly because the white paint isn’t going to dry where you applied the petroleum jelly. Once the white paint is dry everywhere else, drag a paint scraper across the wet paint.

It’s going to pull up the paint and mix it with the petroleum jelly. As it pulls the paint up, keep dragging the paint scraper across the surface,

Your chippy finish will start to appear! Keep going until the white paint is completely dry and you’re happy with your finish!

Bring your vintage-inspired pumpkin to life

First, you need to cut a piece of your burlap that is slightly wider than your book page. I just tore some pages out of a Dollar Tree book!

Take a piece of wax paper and place it over the frame so you can trace out the size of your pumpkin. Cut your wax paper pumpkin out and tape it onto the burlap.

Cut the shape of the pumpkin out of the burlap and tear the book pages to fit onto the burlap pumpkin without covering it completely.

To age the book pages, I lightly brushed a small amount of brown paint around the edges of each piece of paper and used a wet wipe to smudge the paint.

I then brushed back over the pages with a tiny bit of white paint to brighten up the paper. Let the paper dry (I used my heat gun to speed up the drying process).

Bring it all together

Hot glue the stained canvas frame onto the DIY chippy surface. Then, hot glue the burlap pumpkin shape towards the bottom of the sign.

Next, you’re going to hot glue the book pages over top of the burlap pumpkin shape. Cut a leaf off the greenery of your choice and hot glue it along with three small sticks at the top of the pumpkin to create its stem.

Finally, you’re going to make a little bow to go on your DIY book page pumpkin! Cut a few strips of your neutral-toned ribbons and get a little bit of raffia.

Lay the ribbon strips in an x pattern and put a bit of raffia on top of them. Pinch the center and secure it with a piece of jute twine.

Fluff and trim your bow to your liking, then hot glue it in place on the stem of your book page pumpkin!

Hot glue a bit of Dollar Tree Spanish Moss across the bottom of the sign, just beneath the pumpkin. Lastly, hot glue some craft sticks across the top of the back of the sign so you can hang it up!
