DIY Boho Doily Family Sign
I’ve been pulling out some older projects that I just can’t believe I didn’t share with you sooner! This DIY Boho Doily Family Sign is one of those. I am obsessed with how perfect this simple DIY project turned out, and I hope you love it just as much!
Even though this isn’t a Dollar Tree DIY, it is still a very affordable project to make. Y’all know me, I am always looking for ways to decorate my home on a budget!
Let’s get started
This DIY Boho Doily Family Sign was honestly such an easy and fun DIY project that I just think you are going to LOVE it!
You’re going to start by cutting a piece of your scrapbook paper pattern of choice to fit over the chalkboard center of your frame.
I used a piece of blue floral scrapbook paper from a Country Road book of scrapbook paper that I found at Hobby Lobby (ON SALE! Score!).
You could also use a page from a book if you wanted to. When I do that, I just get a book from Dollar Tree.
Before I decoupaged the scrapbook paper onto the chalkboard frame, I used Dixie Belle’s Coffee Bean Chalk Paint to stain the wood frame.
I mixed just a small bit of water and chalk paint and then spread the mixture across the wooden frame with a baby wipe.
The water helps the wood absorb the paint and gives it the stained look rather than a painted look. You could always use wood stain, but that is typically more expensive than my technique!
How to decoupage
The key to decoupaging any surface is Mod Podge! Apply a liberal coat of Mod Podge directly to the chalkboard surface, and carefully place the scrapbook paper cutout onto the Mod Podge.
You want to avoid creating any wrinkles or creases in the scrapbook paper. If any form, you can place a piece of plastic saran wrap over the scrapbook paper and use your hands to smooth out the imperfections.
Family
You can set the decoupaged chalkboard frame to the side for now. Next, I painted the border of the Family lettering.
This specific one was purchased at my local Walmart, but the Dollar Tree also has some great ones if you can’t find the same one I used.
I used Dixie Belle’s In the Navy Chalk Paint and an artist’s brush to paint around the Family letters. I know in the pictures the family lettering looks almost black, but it is navy blue, I promise!
Allow the navy chalk paint to dry before moving to the next step. I used my heat gun to speed up the drying process, but if you don’t have a heat gun you can use a hairdryer on the low, cool setting!
Once the navy chalk paint was dry, I painted the Family letters with Dixie Belle’s Fluff Chalk Paint (white). This really helps the letters pop against the navy background color!
Add your stencil
Before we hot glue the painted Walmart Family lettering onto the decoupaged chalkboard frame, we are going to paint the stencil design onto the face of the frame. Choose a stencil that you like, and secure it in place.
I love to use an adhesive stencil because I don’t have to worry about having to tape it or it sliding out of place. Once your stencil is in place, use Dixie Belle’s Fluff Chalk Paint to paint the stencil design onto the wood.
Grab your doilies
Next, you’re going to need two doilies and some more Mod Podge. Instead of applying the Mod Podge to the scrapbook paper and then placing the doilies, I applied the Mod Podge directly to the doilies and then pressed them onto the scrapbook paper.
This made sure that I didn’t use too much Mod Podge or apply it where the doilies would not be placed. The doilies were slightly overlapping in the center of the chalkboard frame.
Bring it all together
Once the doilies have dried (I used my heat gun again to speed it up), it is time to place the painted Family lettering. Apply hot glue to the back of the wood lettering and press it down to the center of the chalkboard frame.
Luckily, the chalkboard frame already had a jute twine hanger, so I didn’t have to add my own. If you don’t like the jute twine, you can always remove it and add your own!
I hope you enjoyed this DIY Boho Doily Family Sign as much as I did and decide to make one for yourself! I would love to see how yours turns out!
