How to make DIY Lemon Decor with Napkins
Start with your Dollar Tree sign box. The one that I used had paper inserts that I had to remove, first. I used a putty knife to remove the inserts and then used a sanding sponge to smooth out the surface.
My sign box already had a white frame. If yours doesn’t, you need to paint the frame white. To do that, you can use Apple Barrel White Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint.
Then, trace the size of the inside of the sign box onto a piece of paper. I applied a coat of Mod Podge to the inside of the sign box, then placed the piece of paper onto the Mod Podge.
The paper helps cover up the printed design so we can decoupage the blue plaid napkin over it without having to paint. Use a piece of plastic saran wrap to smooth out any wrinkles or creases that formed in the paper.
Then, cut your blue plaid napkin to fit inside the sign box. Before you decoupage the blue plaid napkin, you need to separate the napkin plies. Otherwise, the top ply (the one with the design) might not adhere properly and could peel up later.
How to decoupage
Apply Mod Podge over the piece of white paper and place the blue plaid napkin ply onto the Mod Podge. Again, use a piece of plastic saran wrap to smooth out any imperfections that may form.
Now, you need to get your lemon napkin design ready. The lemon napkin that I used had the same lemon design on each of the four quadrants of the napkin, so I cut one of those squares out.
Separate the napkin plies for the lemon napkins just like you did for the blue plaid napkin, then trace the size of the lemon napkin square onto a piece of Dollar Tree foam board.
I cut the foam board to the correct size, applied a coat of Mod Podge to one side of the foam board square, and placed the lemon napkin design onto the foam board. I used a rolling pin to smooth out the lemon napkin and remove any wrinkles, creases, or bubbles.
How to stain wood
Next, you need two giant craft sticks, brown paint (I used Apple Barrel Burnt Umber Acrylic Paint), and wet wipes (I like to use baby wipes). You’re going to stain each of the giant craft sticks.
Pour the brown paint onto the craft sticks and use a wet wipe to spread the paint across the surface of them. The water helps the wood absorb the paint pigment and it stains the wood instead of giving it a painted finish.
Set those to the side to dry, and get the Dollar Tree Tumbling Tower blocks ready. Before you stain the blocks, you need to hot glue them together in two strips of 14. Hot glue the long sides together to create your strips.
Pour brown paint onto the strips of Tumbling Tower blocks, spray them with water, then use a wet wipe to spread the paint across the blocks. Make sure you cover each side of the strips.
I used my heat gun to quickly dry the Tumbling Tower blocks. If you don’t have a heat gun, you can use a hairdryer on the low cool setting. Once their dry, hot glue a craft stick onto each of the strips.
The craft sticks will hang over the edges of the blocks, but you can trim them down with a pair of scissors. Next, paint the wood with white paint (I used Apple Barrel White Acrylic Paint).
I used a chippy paintbrush to dry brush the white paint across the wood. I used my heat gun again to quickly dry the paint, then I went over the wood with a sanding sponge to slightly distress it.
Bring it all together
Cut one of the Dollar Tree beaded necklaces so it isn’t a continuous circle anymore, and hot glue it around the face of the Dollar Tree sign box. Then, hot glue the decoupaged foam board to the center of the sign box.
Finally, hot glue the Tumbling Tower blocks onto the sign box. I put one strip on the top of the sign and one strip across the bottom of the sign! Once the glue dries, you’re ready to decore with your DIY Lemon Decor!
