How to Make a DIY Farmhouse Hanging Planter
Start making this adorable DIY project by painting the Dollar Tree planter white. I used Waverly White Chalk Paint, but you can use whichever white paint you prefer. I didn’t do a complete coat of white paint, so you could still see a bit of green peeking through.
Next, you need to remove the handle from your Dollar Tree plunger. Luckily, the handle just unscrews from the plunger! Then, you’re going to stain the handle brown.
To do this, spray the wood plunger handle with water, then use a wet wipe to spread the brown paint across the handle. I used Folkart Java Chalk Paint, but, again, you can use whichever brown paint you prefer.
The water will help the wood absorb the paint and give it a stained finish rather than a painted look. If you apply too much paint, you can go back over the plunger handle with a clean wet wipe to remove the excess paint.
While you have the brown paint out, go ahead and paint the welcome lettering. Dab a wet wipe into the brown paint, then dab it across the face of the welcome lettering.
Make sure your Dollar Tree planter is dry before you continue. I used my heat gun to speed up the drying process. If you don’t have a heat gun, you can use a hairdryer on the low cool setting.
Next, you’re going to drill a hole by each of the corners of the painted Dollar Tree planter. Push the end of a piece of nautical rope through each of the back two holes and tie each end in a knot to keep the ropes from coming out the holes.
Bring it all together
Hot glue floral foam to the inside of the planter, then hot glue the boxwood greenery mat on top of the floral foam. You can also push floral sprays into the floral foam if you’d rather flowers than the boxwood greenery that I used.
Waverly Antique Wax is great for aging your DIY projects. Next, lightly brush a small amount of the Waverly Antique Wax across the painted Dollar Tree planter, then hot glue the welcome lettering to the front of the planter.
Grab your stained Dollar Tree plunger handle and wrap the nautical ropes around it. Make the front piece of the rope longer than the back piece because you still have to push the front end through the front holes and tie them in a knot.
Then, I pushed the first rope end through its hole before I wrapped the second piece around the plunger handle so I could make sure the ropes were the same lengths.
The finishing touches
Once you are sure the ropes are the same lengths and you have them pushed through the holes and tied in knots, hot glue the loops around the plunger handle to keep them from moving and making the planter hang crooked.
