Let’s get to it!
You’re going to start making this adorable DIY birdhouse by removing the Dollar Tree stretched canvas from its frame. Use an Exacto knife to cut the canvas up against the staples. This way, you can save your canvas for later!
Once you have the front of the canvas removed, you can tear off the remnants from the back of the frame. Then, you can either hammer the staples back into the frame or pull them out.
Next, grab brown paint, I used Dixie Belle Coffee Bean Chalk Paint, and paint the Dollar Tree canvas frame. If you wanted to you could stain the frame, but I wanted the darker color that comes from just painting it.
Make sure you paint the face as well as the inner and outer edges of the frame. You don’t have to paint the back though. We are going to attach the buffalo check scrapbook paper later.
Popsicle Stick Birdhouse
Alright, I used 20 popsicle sticks to make the front of the birdhouse. Grab your popsicle sticks, a wet wipe, and your brown paint. I used the wet wipe to spread the brown paint onto the popsicle sticks.
This gave them more of a stained finish than the Dollar Tree canvas frame. Once all the sticks were stained, I placed 7 sticks side by side and hot glued a popsicle stick across the back to secure them together.
The section is going to be the top of the birdhouse, so I cut the top of the popsicle sticks into a point. It doesn’t have to be perfect because we are going to line it with moss later.
Next, secure 7 more popsicle sticks together. For this section, trim the top to have a straight edge. This section is going to go right below the sticks with a pointed top.
Now, place both the sections face down with the pointed section above the flat top section. You should have 6 remaining popsicle sticks. Place three sticks face down on each side of the lower section. Finally, secure all the sticks together with additional popsicle sticks.
Next, dry brush Dixie Belle Fluff Chalk Paint across the entire front of the popsicle sticks. You’re going to get an effortless aged, distressed finish by doing this.
It’s all in the details
Set your popsicle sticks to the side and grab your Dollar Tree canvas frame while you still have the white paint out. Just like you did with the popsicle sticks, dry brush white paint across the face and inner and outer edges of the frame.
Allow the paint to dry, then place the frame onto your buffalo check scrapbook paper with the paper print down. Trace the shape of the frame onto the paper and cut it out.
Apply hot glue to the back of the frame and press the scrapbook paper in place. Next, I used an artist’s brush to paint brown circles onto the popsicle sticks. I did three circles on the lower section and one circle on the top section.
You can’t have a birdhouse without stands, so grab a Dollar Tree wood dowel and use a pair of aviation snip to cut 4 sections about an inch long.
Hot glue a wood dowel piece underneath each brown circle. Then, grab your moss and hot glue some onto the pointed top section and the flat top sections.
Next, you’re going to make little raffia bows to go on each of the wood dowel pieces. I took several pieces of raffia, wrapped them around the wood dowel, tied them in a knot, and trimmed the raffia’s ends.
Lastly, I hot glued the little raffia knots onto the base of the wood dowel sections and trimmed up the green moss sections with a pair of scissors!
